This is Kino. She’s one of the coolest anime babes. Why? Cos she has dual revolvers, a motorbike, uses "Boku" and is a traveller.

Kino no Tabi (Kino’s Journey) is a serialised light novel that appears in Dengeki HP. It’s ongoing but currently has 9 volumes. There’s a 13 episode anime series by GENCO and a 30 minute OVA. I haven’t read the novels so I can’t talk about them. The illustrator for the cover draws really beautifully, though I don’t have a sample of his/her work now.

The anime is episodic, with each ep detailing her trip in a new country. Each of these countries are diverse with creative customs and sometimes really dark rituals. While it’s not the most addictive of anime, Kino no Tabi oozes class, creativity and makes you ponder a lot about the nature of humans.

Kino is a girl, though this itself is quite the spoiler, as her gender is revealed a few eps into the series. She’s pretty monotone and calm in all situations, even in times of danger. Kino travels with a 3-day rule, that is, she doesn’t ever stay in one country for more than three days since she can learn all that she needs to know within this time frame. For self-defence, she wields a .22 caliber Persuader (revolver) and has a hidden .44 behind her back. Despite her kid appearance, Kino has god-like talent at shooting and has lightning draw speed.

Ok that was a trick title. The only anime-related thing this event has is the me reading PLUTO volume 2 while waiting for the show to start.

It’s a good manga really.

The event is the National Day Parade 2006, which is an annual celebration of the day, as kwok puts it, "the day when my people were thrown aside by our northern neighbours to die in the wilds". And look how things turned out! Hence we celebrate fervently every year with multi-million dollar parades and more fireworks than Black Lagoon and Coyote Ragtime Show combined.

I was there to work, unfortunately. Despatching my underling photographers to the far corners of the stadium much like how Kira uses his DRAGOON system, I then planted my ass on the bench and did not move for the next 4 hours. Much like Tezuka in Prince of Tennis. Here’s a pictorial look at the whole event. Note that my camera was a Fuji Finepix Z2, not the most professional but it was red and white, the national colours. Photography became a nightmare after the sun set, having had to use settings like ISO 1600 lol.

This year’s parade was pretty bad compared to last year’s, which was decentralised and held simultaneously at 5 different spots with tanks rumbling across the country in a flashy mobile column. This year had little military presence but more dancing. I don’t like dancing. The complicated choreography of every item just shows how much these people put in to perfect their routines. 5 months of harsh spartan training paid just for this day, poor kids.

Everyone has seen an evil anime eye. These are so popular, that they can be considered aesthetically pleasing when worn as an accessory. The multi-functional nature of it is a plus too. Beyond the cool factor, you can use it to scare salesmen, rid wild animals and say "Get Lost" without wasting energy on words. But how do we do it?

Revy does it with sick evil.

Revy: Easy. Just be born as a Chinese orphan in a pirate-infested scum-filled discriminating hellhole and kill at least 2000 people. And then chat with a naive Japanese salaryman.

Ok, so from that, we learn that it’s good to harbour bad thoughts. A LOT OF BAD THOUGHTS. So we move onto to Evil Eye Guru 2.

Kyouya is the win.

Kyouya: Disturb my sleep and you’ll get it.

Oh, so being sleep-deprived and with low-blood pressure is the key to getting evil eyes? I notice that also has the useful side-effect of adding dark eyebags, which accentuate the evilness of the actual eye.

Now class, let’s give it a shot!

I watch anime for 20 hours. Evil anime that has lots of evil people and evil acts, such as Rahxephon, Tsuyokiss and Night Head Genesis. Btw NHG is only evil because the seiyuu of the younger bro is Ishida Akira aka Athrun Zala, the most irritating voice in the Galaxy. Watch ep 3 and you’ll be so deaf from his screaming, the evil eyes will just manifest.

We have now 3 versions of Nanoha in varying stages of mass production. The Alter one has been released and isn’t too bad. The Movic version is expensive but is pretty much the coolest. And now, Kotobukiya joins in the fun.

With a price tag of 5040 yen and standing at 21 cm, this 1/7 scale PVC figurine is at first glance, superior to Alter’s. After all, it has a more wingy weapon. But in terms of pose and appearance, the two are pretty much the same and Koto has this really annoying glossy finish on their figurines. The face of Koto Nanoha also appears to be rather… plump and oily.

The number of wingy spikes are another concern. Sometimes, there’s just too much of a good thing. Here, it just makes everything look messy.

Interesting is the hair though. Nanoha seems to have her hair parted to the left while the Alter version has it to the right.

I’m not too big a fan of Nanoha so I’m skipping this. It’s to be released in November 2006.
