How would one define the Summer 2007 anime season? That is a question that has many different answers, each one dependent on the otaku asked that question. Some might say Baccano, as is the case with our very macho Fuhrer TJ Han. Others might say School Days, if only perhaps for the pleasure of seeing how messed up Makoto and Girls can get. And of course, one cannot forget Lucky Star, worshipped and derided in equal measures by the pro-KyoAni and the anti-KyoAni factions respectively. But for me, Summer 2007 did not mean any of these three to me; yes, not even Lucky Star, unthinkable as it may seem to some for a supposed KyoAni fanboy like me. Indeed, for me, Summer 2007 is defined by one of the quirkiest black comedies I’ve seen in recent times; Sayonara Zetsubou Sensei.

Less than a week ago, on 16th September 2007, the last episode of Kyoto Animation’s Lucky Star aired. Throughout its 24-week run, it was easily the most controversial, polarizing KyoAni work to date; either one like it, or one didn’t. But for all of the online arguments that have been raged over it, its time has now drawn to a close. And say what one will, there will never be another anime quite like it.

In recent years, there has been a relative proliferation of anime adaptations of visual novels from the famed VN stable, Key. Not since a certain adaptation in 2002 have the Kagikko ever had it so good, and this is arguably all due to one thing; Kyoto Animation, and how its studio debut of AIR (TV) took the first step of rewriting the rules of what an adaptation of a Visual Novel should look like. Ever since then, Toei Animation and Kyoto Animation have taken turns in giving us their animated adaptations of KEY’s greatest stories, and Fall 2007 marks the third time Toei and KyoAni have locked horns this season, with their respective releases of "CLANNAD: The Motion Picture" and "CLANNAD (TV)" respectively.

As our fearless, macho Fuhrer TJ Han and my fellow colleague Kokanaden have vested interests in the recently-concluded NUS Anime Bazaar (being the incoming Marketing Head of the NUS Comics and Animation Society, and the former’s minion respectively), I became RIUVA’s representative for the event, since I’m supposed to be the unbiased view for RIUVA and all *coughyeahrightcough*.
