Today is Mid-Autumn Festival for us Chinese. Just in case you otakus think it’s a Japanese festival, it’s actually of Chinese origins. In fact, it has quite a few legends accompanying its existence which are quite tedious to tell here, so you guys might as well read it off the Wiki link I posted. The way we celebrate Mid-Autumn Festival, or some call it Mooncake Festival, is basically to look at the full moon, drink hot Chinese tea, eat mooncakes and burn paper lanterns. Well okay, you aren’t exactly supposed to burn the lanterns, but when the neighbourhood kids come together, a lantern bonfire is inevitable.

There was a time when Mid-Autumn Festival was the hip and cool Chinese traditional festival over here. Days before the festival, you’d see grocery stores stocking up heavily on candles, paper lanterns and electronic bulb lanterns. In recent years, however, it’s becoming more of a Mooncake sale day. A single regular-sized mooncake costs at least SGD$8.50, proving to be a highly profitable business. I no longer see that many Moon-Appreciating Carnivals going on locally and people are just way too busy to gather around a table to talk about life together while sipping tea. Some confectionaries have the impression that mooncakes taste best with extremely thin skin and super thick lotus paste filling. Those fools! A core part of a mooncake’s taste is the slight bitterness of the skin. If one were to eat 0.5mm thick skinned mooncakes, he should might as well just buy a bag of lotus paste to stuff himself crazy. I also fail to understand how anyone would enjoy “snow-skinned” mooncakes, which are basically uncooked and chilled mooncakes. It tastes plain horrible. In fact, all the non-traditional mooncakes are just horrible.

My mum enjoys using my Little Busters! mug for some reason. Must be the gay pink.

Just so that my parents won’t be disappointed, I made it a point to stay home today and make them happy by tasting 760-calorie+45g fats mooncakes. The feeling of this annual family reunion practice is getting rather vague these years so I guess I should post it up here and ask you fellow mooncake-eating otakus how you guys are celebrating it today.

And my parents were nice enough not to leave any mooncakes for me.

I got sick of mooncakes before the Mid-Autumn Festival this year, since I’ve already eaten more than I can remember for the past 2 weeks, for free.

I ate 1/16 of a big mooncake and continued to mug. My parents went to sleep.

Spend it with family. I actually prefer the non-traditional ones but I never eat much of either anyway.

And the Moon was full and bright, despite the on/off showers on my side.

“760-calorie 45g fats mooncakes.” what is this nonsense? Calories (note the capital C stands for kilocalories, which is what noobs always call calories. 1000 calories is one kilocalorie) is just a measurement of energy, so why are you adding the fat content together with the energy content?

I didn’t realise it was this festival, I was playing Team Fortress.

Mooncake?? I’m too busy mugging to even consider that, but at least my hall is having a mooncake celebration this coming Thurs. Free mooncake then! For now I shall enjoy some tea with my physics notes >.

was tempted to sit outside and drink same sake, but meh. too cold by the time i returned home.

Despite the cloudy overcast that just blurred the night skies where I am, I was able to enjoy my usual quarter of mooncake with family… before departing and diving back to studies
