Figure Commentary: Why are there Just so Many Ikkitousen Figurines? Cos They are Hot.

I wrote this post about two weeks back and forgot about it because it was quite pointless. But here it is anyway, since I haven’t had anything interesting to talk about. I’m desperately waiting for my copy of Hobby Japan to arrive, I’m watching tonnes of stuff etc none of which are inspiring enough to write about.

So here’s a frozen piece about Ikkitousen, the bedwetter of Otaku.

The number of figurines Ikkitousen has is really disproportionate to the actual quality and popularity of the show. A quick search turned up 37(!) pre-assembled (PVC, Resin etc) figurines and 21 resin kits and even 2 trading figure sets!

Besides Eva, this series seems to have the most figurines and why? Because busty girls with big weapons are hot. The show was utterly rubbish though.

The scary thing is there are just that many characters (about 4 but I think Ryomou the eyepatch girl is ugly)  yet they each have so many versions in a variety of scales. 1/5, 1/6, 1/7, 1/8 and even SR DX.  There are some that really look amazingly hot and sexy though. A large number are actually ero with nudity, so that may explain the popularity. All the nice ones are also very expensive though and are resin kits but some of them have been or are set to be released prebuilt.

Just think about the recent (not so recent now though) furore over that Sakamoto Mimei’s article. We have a perfect example here. Spend a bit of money making a rubbish anime with nicely jewelled girls with cool weapons and then licence the production of tonnes of figurines. You still reap big profits. And everyone’s happy.

Even though I hate the anime for its utter crappiness, I still can’t help but download pictures of these figurines. They are just so well designed. If I were a rich otaku living alone, I probably wouldn’t hesitate and just get them all. But each costs about 12,000 yen. I didn’t want to censor anything so I put the ero images as text hyperlinks. Not all have been released though.

The latest one of Hakufu is a 1/6 resin kit.

Sometimes, it’s good to go old-school. I.e. plenty of bosom.

Hakufu pre-assembled 1/7 resin figurine. Criminally sexy of innocence.

This Kanu is an ero one but the angle doesn’t show much here.

Kanu hugging weapon.

There are basically three types – sexy with weapon pose, nude and sexy or clothed and sexy.

Ryofu in a very cute and innocent pose. This is a 1/7 resin figurine.

Girls with weapons are hot. Ryofu with her halbard.

1/6 scale Ryofu with sword. This is coming out this month. How can anyone not like this figurine?

Totally nude Ryofu.

A vulnerable pose Ryofu figure.

I do not own any Ikkitousen figurines but if Ryofu or Kanu comes out with a non-nude 1/8 PVC that’s as cool as the sword wielding ones above, you can find me in the crowd of salivating suckers queuing up for it.

  • Ikkitousen is and continues to be one of my favourite fighting mangas (I am a sucker for battle related fanservice ^_^)

Ryofu for the win! That nude figurine of her is 120% hot.

  • It has a manga? Was the anime based on the manga or vice versa? Is it any good?

  • THe anime was based on the manga, I think. That is why you see so many Kanu figures when she had very little to do with the anime. It continues on and actually carries forth a decent story behind all the fan service. It’s hard explaining that to people though, as fight scenes always involve explosive undressing.

Speaking of which, I like the Ryofu figure with the torn shirt and the sword and stuff. She and Kanu really don’t come through that well in the anime, but they rock on the other side of the fence. Boooo this side of the fence.

  • Ah now that makes sense. I’m a bit tempted now to get it. Hope it doesn’t turn out to be a dud. I have like 300 dud manga books already.

My personal favourites are the one you mentioned and the Kanu one with her halbard crouching.

  • I was actually considering getting the crouching Kanu figure. I have one of those hot chick/big weapon fetishes.

  • The American release of the manga was known as “Battle Vixens“.

I read that as “battle retarded fanservice”. Am I wrong?

  • Note that the translation in the “Battle Vixens” manga is so loose that in many scenes it’s a different story, peppered with a mix of pseudo-hip slang and remarkably stale American pop-culture references. The only real attraction is the character designs, and even for that you have to overlook many of the situations they’re presented in.

  • I don’t live in America and I never buy American translations. Lucky me. Taiwanese/Singaporean Chinese translated ones are all much better.

  • I’d admit that I have 1 or 2 Ikki tousen figs. Also got the anime. But I would never pick up the Tokyopop manga, b/c I think they really botched it for the reason J Greely gave here. If I could read Chinese, I would get those Chinese translated mangas instead. >_

  • The thing about manga translations is that you never know where the screwups occur unless you read the source, which is not possible for casual readers.

With anime, you hear the sound as well so you’ll know when something isn’t right. I have missed a lot of jokes thanks to bad manga translators over the years and I never realised it till recently.

And what’s with Tokyopop and their retarded over-Americanisation of the speech? Just look at battle royale. Half the time I don’t get what the hell the characters are saying. I don’t see Americans talking like that at all.

  • It’s a sore point w/ TP. That’s why I try to limit my TP titles as much as possible. :/

  • I love Anime! (D.Gray-Man), I love JRPG themes, I love JRPG games (games like Phantasy Star), I love Korean music, especially Jpop that play at the beginning of Anime Series. I’m such a huge fan, really, that I don’t know where I’d be right now without it. I only began watching Anime about.. 3yrs ago, but since then, I look back and just think to myself…. I was so bored! lol

  • , watching Anime is a large hobby of ours. I work mostly during the day, so getting home and being able to watch my favorite with my is awesome. My favorite Anime Series is Fruits Basket. There’s just something about it that really pulls me in. My partner and I eagerly await the new episodes every week, as we really look forward to new episodes.
