Music Review, Lyrics and Translation: Red Fraction (Full Version), Only a Fraction as Good as the OP

Frankly, I’m disappointed. This song was rated quite highly by many including myself and it fits Black Lagoon like a tailor-made glove. But after hearing the full version, its obvious flaws surface.

The completely rubbish Engrish lyrics that try way too hard to sound evil and cool. The show is guilty of similar-styled dialogue but at least they don’t go to this extent. Ok here are the lyrics. I just cannot take the song seriously at all now.

Red Fraction

by MELL (I’ve Sound)

I have a big gun
I took it from my Lord
Sick with Justice
I just wanna feel you

I’m your angel
Only a ring away
You make me violate you
No matter who you are

It’s all up to you
No one lives forever

Been burn in the hell
By all those pigs out there

It’s always been hell
From when I was born

They make me violate them
No matter who they are

Get down on your knees
Get a good head on your shoulders
If it’s for your guys
Go to the end of the earth
Do what you think
Give it with dedication
I’ll put out your misery

Have no prayer
So, I keep the gun with me

For my safety
I’ll do it with no sweat

They mean business
No time for sissy pig

Queen of ocean
Sing "the Volga" to you

No need to think about it
You do it or you die

THose aren’t tears
Don’t let it trick on you
I am hard as steel
Get out of my way

Pay back all at once
Suck away the tender part

You made a mess
For Christ sake, this rotten world
Shit out of luck
Go with my vision
Light up the fire
Right on the power
Weapon… I have it all

Get down on your knees
Get a good head on your shoulders
If it’s for your guys
Go to the end of the earth
Do what you think
Give it with dedication
I’ll put out your misery

You made a mess
For Christ sake, this rotten world
Shit out of luck
Go with my vision
Light up the fire
Right on the power
Weapon… I have it all

And yeah that’s it. The chorus is pretty nice though, you just have to filter out the lyrics and pretend they are singing in Japanese. It sure sounds like it anyway.

There’s a lot of vocal distortion, heavy drums etc. Red Fraction isn’t exactly the type of song I normally listen to, but it’s still passable. The amount of time the song goes without vocals and just keeping up a repetitive beat is also very high and that’s a bit boring. I have to say it again, the chorus and the line that goes "You make me violate you, no matter who you are" are the best parts of the song and when listening to the song, I feel like I’m just waiting for these.

This is the type of song that’s carried by the OP animation. BL’s great OP sequence brings RF to a higher level than what it really is at.

Download here! But please destroy after 24 hours.

  • Lol i agree with you. The OP fitted well with Black Lagoon because nobody could figure out the lyrics. Hahaha. After going thru the lyrics on the booklet, it’s seriously rubbish that’s pumped up. But that’s amazing right? Lol. Making nonsense sound cool.

  • I really should write my own Red Fraction lyrics.

Ok stay tuned for that in a later post.

  • Ok sing this according to the Red Fraction tune.
It’s for the first 1 minute 24 seconds of the song. I think it’s better than theirs because it has good grammar haha. Still lame.

  • Yours is the best song written since the songs that Koyuki wrote for Beck.

  • Man, the offical version was REAL TERRIBLE. >.>

But the Red Fraction ~Riuva House Funky Pop Party Remix DELUXE~ saved the song for me. Someone needs to get in contact with MELL and get that remix put to disc quickfast.

  • It sounds like the I’ve guys have been listening to KMFDM lately. The song’s not horrible… but it’s far from amazing. It would have been better had they put a little more thought into the production. Sadly, such is the case with most I’ve songs… they seem to think throwing more “crap” into an arrangement automatically makes things better.

As for the lyrics… well, at least they can’t be heard all that well.

  • You are really high on drugs aren’t you. Lol.

  • Hey it’s by I’ve Sound. When did they start to suck? Just fire the songwriter and they are ready to go.

  • Doitsumo Koitsumo

It was a good song.. I don’t get why u guys dun like it. FUCK YOU ALL LOOOOOOOOOOL.

  • I quite like it – the lyrics are confused and angry and don’t make much sense, but isn’t that appropriate? The spirit is right. A lot of the right ingredients are there. Things like “they make me violate them” fit perfectly with Revy’s rampage against the nazis. It’s got an angry teenager feel to it, too, mixed with maturity.

    I like it.

  • I actualy like this song as well (I actually kinda liked it more when i didn’t like the lyrics but..) I think it fits well with the show especially with Revy.. If it didn’t have the show it totaly wouldn’t make sense.. so ^_^;; least it has the show.

  • ignore the lyrics and it still sounds good. and it fits the shows op perfectly like you’ve said

but yeah whoever actualy wrote the lyrics should pur a gun to their head. chorus aint bad tho, but some of that, no

  • RandomVisitDuDE

Hmmm i like this Track! ya the lyrics are not FanTastic.. but then again its not like English is their native language…. Id like to see you guys write something in Japaneses… Generally the instrumentals are kool, the song is a little repetitive.. kinda like the lame comments it gets! but all round its better than most of the crap thats been on the radio/cable.

  • i always had no idea wtf they were saying Lol
i knew it was somewhat nonsensical english, but after reading the actual lyrics its like a WTF slap to d face LoL
interesting enough how nonsense lyrics can make a song sound cool. i seriously thought they were speaking jap the first time i heard it.

germans do it too tho, ever heard tiesto’s love comes again? nice song, AY’s remix is better, but WTF wif the vocal Lol. if u think about it, most dance/trance/electronic songs who arent produced by people who actually speak english as a first language tend to have really bad nonsensical english lyrics in them, but they still end up sounding cool and stuck in your head. how’s that for irony.

  • RandomVisitDuDE

Aye! thats the spirit ^^ As long as it sounds kool, who cares what the lyrics are ;-)

  • Sherman, the Ramni

It’s a weird song… it fits really well with the anime, and if you think on Levi when listening, it will make sense; it matches her madness and anger to perfection.
IMHO, it lacked some power… less distortion and more strength (aka more bass, drums and a good guitar) should do the trick.

  • Lyrics are overrated and too many people spend too much time “analyzing” them. “This song sucks because it has bad lyrics”…well what the hell are good lyrics? They never make any sense, and it’s just a waste of time to figure out what they mean. Good music is good not because of the lyrics, but because of how aestheticaly pleasing it is to the ear–I myself have put this song on repeat and can’t stop listening to it.

  • I like this song to wake up to, to drive to, and to program to…pulse-pounding beats, energetic enough to wake me up in the morning. Yeah, the lyrics are pretty funny, but it’s Engrish anyways (I’m a bit surprised that it’s ALL Engrish; I was expecting for some of it to be in Japanese), so I tune it out. The Instrumental Version is pretty good in this respect–kinda like Hard Trance. I agree that the lyrics are weak without the imagery of the show playing in my head, though.

  • I’ve watched Black Lagoon and I really liked the opening song, its really suited for such a fast paced action anime.

Im looking for the full version. Could u re-upload the full song as ure download link isn’t working. Thx ^^

  • Jimbo: I removed the mp3 because way too many people were hotlinking it for their silly blogs. Try gendou.com .

  • Just remember that it’s Engrish and enjoy the rhythm. I’d suggest that for the song anyways – not that a lot of Western music’s much better in that respect anymore. I swear, some days I turn the radio on and half the songs have lyrics that sound like they were written by a commercial jingle writer who got brain damage.

  • [hiniku ON
See?? This is why you should never get Japanese people angry. They spit at you in Engrish!
    [hinuku OFF]

Now you know how MOST of you students of Japanese sound on the other side when you say ‘baka’ or ‘loli’ or ‘otaku’ too much.

    You have been warned.

  • the song goes well with revy, who in my opinion the show revolves around a lot. if you look at the lyrics they match her almost completely and if youve seen the episodes too :P

  • forgot one more thing! the intro vid also concentrates on revy a lot more too. shes probably the actual main character in the show as well. not rock

  • Ok i just got into black lagoon, and i’m really a metalhead, but this song stuck to me like peanutbutter on the floor, but i didnt get the lyrics, so i thought i’d search for them, found htis, and read what the review said, with the disappointment and whatnot.. I read the two first lines of the lyrics and stopped instantly. this song is incredibly good in my ears, and i dont want to ruin that with the lyrics..
Although i will eventually hear them.. i’m a guitarplayer/vocalist in a Melodic Death Metal band myself.. and lyrics that can be hard to pick at first is common in my “profession”, so how can this be harder than growling lyrics? i dont know, but from what i read, i’ll get disappointed..

On an other note, i really like the style of singing, even thought its obviously heavily processed digitally, which i useually hate, but it fitted with the song.

And to Mariachi; Aye indeed it goes well with her. Although i have songs that in my opinion would fit better, i wont state them for my own reasons.

  • eh you don’t like the lyrics lol…. I actually think the lyrics fit everything perfectly. I think the engrish is the best part. I’ve listened to enough english music on the radio and such and that gets tiring might as well listen to engrish heh. Theres tons of american music that does’n't use correct grammar and such so it’s all good.

The lyrics seem to mostly go together so I have no clue what any of you are talking about how the lyrics ruined the song somewhat for you? Is saying christ sake and such offending you because your religious lol?

Well it’s just my opinion and you have yours so lets all just stick to em.

  • What’s the meaning of this song? I don’t get it.

  • The meaning doesnt matter. What matters is this song rocks! It fits perfectly with the angry backtone in the series. Ever since i heard it, i cant stop listening to it… At school, in the car, at the pc, even when i sleep ^^ Its true that the lyrics are somewhat weird or incoherent, but it fits the theme very well imo.

  • A song can simply be musical notes unaided by words. Likewise, Lyrics do not have to be in a coherent order if it manages to mean something to its audience. In this case it adds to the music. Many of the people who had listened to it loved it more before they knew what the lyrics actually were. Why should that change how you view a song? It’s like observing a beautiful piece of art from a distance.

You admire it for what it is at first. But upon closer inspection you find that the fine piece of art was painted on a drab torn pice of canvas. Had you not scrutinized over the small imperfections so much you could enjoy the larger picture as you had before. Its when we look to close at something do we lose perspective and in that we lose sight of what we had treasured. Theres truth in what the maid said for those of you who have watched the anime. “There are some things better off not knowing” or something to that fashion.

In that respect, we lose some of the pleasure we had initially in admiring what we thought was great. Because of our desire to focus on the flaws, and our own will to pursue a greater understanding, it is that which takes the awe away from something we enjoy. Some Ancient buildings that still stand today that defy all logic astound us because there are no records on how primitive civilizations undertook such a project. Most of the time, everything is left to conjecture and guess work. Yet when we learn how things work it takes mystery and wonder out of something and makes it that much more mundane.

To me, the song is great. It does fit black lagoon’s opening perfectly and describes Revy as if her soul was in the song itself. There is different music for everyone. If you dont like this song, keep seeking for something that suits your tastes. “If the shoe fits, wear it.” To each is own. Two thumbs up for this song.

  • Well, i like the song a lot though after reading the lyrics, there’s a bit of disappointment left in me. FYI, i watched the anime coz my bro introduced me to the song 1st and i was very much curious to check out on the anime. Good music, lousy lyrics but overall still very addictive for me since as u’ve all noticed, the singing is very distorted (which of course fits the song very well) ^^v yay.

Dying to hear more of similar songs hehehh ^_ !v

  • Kudos to Passerby, that is a very well written reply. I personally really liked the song but then as i read the lyrics i felt like Densetsu. I do not prefer to listen to music to which i do not agree with the lyrics. And so for me i will always think of the flaws in the canvas. Acutally it is better described as, i have a moral issue with them. ie: I admired the painting from afar but as i approached it turned out to be about a horrible murder( which is pretty true for this case). Instead of now putting the painting in my home, ( as i would have with the song and my computer) i will merely continue to admire it at a distance ( and listen to it when i watch BL).
But to each their own, BTW does anyone like the lyrics? ( no judging if you do, i merely do not prefer it and want to know if some ppl do).

  • All english lyrics rate right up there with the full version of naruto “Wind” by Akeboshi. Nonsensical, but still good songs.

  • Nice song,rubbish lyrics.but overall nice

  • I really like the song, but after seeing what the lyrics are i just laughed. Even though the lyrics aren’t great I still like the song.

  • I still like the the song. I had figure out most of the lyrics anyway (within reason). I came damn close. But now, as you said, I can’ take it seriously anymore. It wasn’t the song itself, just one line: “Weapon. . . I have it all. What the hell?!!!!!!!! I thought it was “Wait for I have it all”. Sure, It make no sense. But, I thought see was referring to waiting for the power (in the previous line).

  • Of course! I still love the song. It makes sense in the aspect of the mind of Revy. But now just can’t wrap my mind around the lyrics I had envisioned. I had thought that the last line of the chorus was “Wait for I have it all” referring to the power that was mentioned in the previous line. Sure, I was not grammatically correct, but I had concluded that much of it was not. I deciphered most of the lyrics (within reason). Now, “Weapon. . . I have it all” just doesn’t sound right. I can’t bring myself to utter those words while singing along. But now, surprisingly, I like the song more because now I know all the lyrics. I already knew that the song didn’t make too much sense grammatically.

WHAT?!!! Did you guys actually think that a song written for a anime written entirely in English and sung by a Japanese woman would make perfect sense?!

  • The song is so great… Once i saw Black Lagoon OP (that`s when i first heard it) i couldn`t turn it off… If played it from the begining again and again untill I got the song…

  • I love the song, and (same), I like the part where “You make me violate you, no matter who you are”. That was the best part, showing how aggresive the song is.

    I liked it, so what?

  • Ah! I forgot to say that my opinion is that this song is dedicated for Black Lagoon`s character Revy (or Levi in the wrong translation). Cause she was tortured all her life and all that stuff about her really reflects song`s words.

  • Um, for the original poster… wow. Just wow. Obvious flaws tend to lead to inductions into the rock n roll hall of fame… read on for more on that.

I personally love the song, am very glad it is in existence, and glad I can hear it whenever I want.

For me, it suits the situation and what goes on in a loose sense perfectly for Black Lagoon. What I think a lot of people fail to realize is the difficulty of translation and of songwriting over and above the translation to another language. The song is written extremely well musically, and obviously that is the strength, not the “excellent english” lyrics, but if lyrics and pronunciation counted in pop music, Aerosmith and Steven Tyler would have gone hungry decades ago, along with James Brown and a ton of other legendary musicians… instead they found their way into the rock n roll hall of fame.

The song has power, strength, excellent production, many many “hooks” throughout the song like the various synthetic sounds (i think an earlier poster mentioned KMFDM – that was awesome hehe), a good strong chorus that is very much a hook in itself as well to back it up. Very good engineering and production, top level if you ask me.

In short, for the people ripping on this version… screw you hippies, this song is awesome. Oh and develop some reading and comprehension skills. Nunchuks and bow-hunting seem like good skills to have in life, but contrary to popular belief, they are not. Keep reading and one day you will understand why poetry is like hyacinths and biscuits.

Just my 2 coppers, as everyone is entitled to an opinion :)

  • I love the song, though the lyrics are a bit ‘different’ but with or without knowing the lyrics its still a great song!

  • The lyric has plenty of flaws but it made sense if you look it as a person’s thought rather than musically written poetry (Which it’s obviously not.) It’s kinda funny when most of you don’t understand the lyric & rather calling it rubbish, because this lyric is quite straight foward (If you’ve watch the anime). The whole idea of this song is about “Seeking Retribution” & “Insecure”. This directly refers to Revy (The female protagonist of Black Lagoon). I’m quite suprised they did the reference of “The Volga Boatmen’s Song” when the song metioned,
“Queen of ocean Sing “the Volga” to you”.

  • Yeah… I’m going to pretend I never saw the lyrics….
when my brother heard the song he said, “what the hell, is this in Japanese or English?” I find it hard to tell xD

  • As soon as I read the lyrics, the song has been completely ruined for me. I loved it in the BL intro, even if the official is a little slow and not well paced. It was incredibly surprising to see that GMS did the remix, which wasn’t too bad. If you play it really loud it sounds pretty good. :D

Also, agreed-the ‘violate you’ line is sweet. The song totally stuck to me because Mell doesn’t sound like your generic jpop idol, she has a voice very unique to japan. Like everyone else said, perfect for BL.

  • This is Japinglish XD so STFU

  • Some points methinks

It’s quite interesting to notice, that although I’m not native englishspeaker, I could get the lyrics right, and to me they never sounded messy or anything. On the other hand, becouse I’m not native speaker that might have been whole reason why I can get it so easily, becouse a lot of people here speak with such an terrible accent. And becouse my own language is quite similar to japanese when it comes to pronunciation so might have helped a bit. Anyway this song fits BL perfectly, and I do like lyrics :P

  • wow…. i love black lagoon and knew the opening song was in english and liked it. but now, after reading what the lyrics actually are… i dont think i can ever enjoy it quite the same…

  • i read it again, and i all i got to say is like…… wow…… im gonna go pretend its in japanese so i can enjoy it again ^^

  • You fucking ruined the song by giving me the lyrics hahaha

  • do a quick run through of the first level on any game where you can mow down as many ‘bad guys’ as fast as you can with this song in the back ground.. it kicks ass. ……

  • Of course the lyrics sound meshed shes Japanese so its gonna sound weird but to me that just makes the song sound cool stop being an idiot and thinking everyone should pronounce English the same way not even Americans speak all English the same. What I am trying to say is take your head out of your ass and listen to the song cause it kicks ass.

  • hahaha yeah all you guys are right on, the reason i like the song is cauz its in anime but also because the cool sounding words, but once u find out the meanings behind em doesnt sound cool anymore. Though the background sound kicks ass, like this techno had sex with electric.

  • OMG, this song is so cool. Sure, you could care less about the lyrics when you first here it. So now that I know them, the song is still cool. Like someone said before, it’s got that angry teen feel.

You say that the lyrics make no sense, but in fact they make perfect sense. Think of it as a highly condensed haiku. They left out complete sentences to make something rough and unpolished. It’s so Unique. It’s that “Me against the world” mentality that makes this song so unique.

Yes, it fits Black Lagoon Perfectly too. But it does well standing on its own. I mean, you guys listen to all those magical girl songs and long winded opening. This song broke the barriers and blew all that other stuff out the water. So what if it’s not about love and happiness. I mean, Beat Crusaders with TONIGHT TONIGHT make even less sense and I don’t see anyone complaining about that.

So for the haters, quite your bitchin and enjoy the song for what it is.

  • the G.M.S- remix is the best !! really good…

  • I think it fits the style of the series. And frankly, those aren’t exactly high class either. Gegardless of the qaulity, blue lagoon is ok to watch. I have certainly seen worse. And the song just has a nice rythm, since you can’t really hear the lyrics anyway. It entertains me, and somehow makes me quite happy so for me it’s not such a bad song.

  • lawl love this song ok so what if its digitally edited it suits the anime completely love the song woooo.love the chorus and no matter who you are etc… some of the long non-vocal bits can drag on a litle LOOOOOOOOOOOOVE THIS SOOOOOOOOOOONG

  • this discussion about the lyrics of the song is really a waste of time, who cares abou the lyrics if you can’t hear what they say anyway? the song itself is energetic, it sticks in my head and I totally love it. english is one of my best languages. I speak english as if it is my first language, and I could not, absolutely NOT understand a thing, until I went searcing for the lyrics and read them. the only sentence I could understand was “no need to think about it” I actually thought this song was about sex!

(I am an european! damn! I am freaking dutch! not the character I mean people from holland, the flat land. with cyclistpaths. I am supposed to understand english! even for a dutch person my english is good! and I didn’t get any of the words, at all. that is really confusing if you’re used to understanding english)

and now that I have read the lyrics, I still like the song as much as before and to me it’s not a dissapointment. songs like these are not on the radio were I live. just the weak boyband and slutty whore songs that actually say; “come and fuck me for free! after you have had me you can go to the next!” go look for Racoon or Kelly Clarkson, you’ll see what I mean, really nagging music. wether you like the lyrics or not the song is GOOD. it’s like a drug. I can’t stop listening to it! it totally fits my feelings at the time, except I have no gun…

it really suits the anime, Revy is the kind of girl that could write these kind of songs. by the way, isn’t she called Levi? it sounds logical to me since it is a european jeans brand. the names don’t have to make sense anyway I guess, I mean, Rock… that is just a nickname. so is Dutch. and I have never heard a japanese person pronounce the L the way it should be. they always say somthing weird like erru. so Levi or Revy they are both possible to me.

  • personally, i love the song, the whole tone of it and i love the lyrics. you have to keep in mind that these are people whose primary language is japanese, not english. it made perfect sense for me the first time through. when reading the lyrics, just keep in mind that they don’t speak good english. what i did was anywhere where it didn’t make sense, i imagined what hey ment and that is fairly easy to do.

  • The Song is awesome and the lyrics fit the anime so well. It’s got the KMFDM ultra heavy beat. What the fuck is there not to like about it?

Lyrics sound fine in english. You seem to be one of the people that will bitch and moron about how bad anime dubs are…. it’s just retard

  • I really love the song and the lyrics!, but japanese singers almost never let english sound as….. english LOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOL

  • In the song I really can’t make out these lyrics. It doesn’t fit at all… I love the song though. And even if it doesn’t fit, it still sounds cool ;) Yeah I agree with the KMFDM ultra-heavy-beat. Pretty similiar stuff.

  • มันสัสๆเลย

  • To me it sounds like you hold yourself to a higher calibre than the song writers and such. To me unless you’re in the business you have no right to complain. Noone is forcing you to listen so shut your mouths. God I hate people who think they know everything. Bottom Line is Music is meant to be enjoyed through the ears! If you don’t like a song because of the lyrics then you are no different than bible throwing jesus-freaks who say that rock is the devils music. Listen here. Day after day I have to put up with people like you who constantly criticise people’s work because you’ve got nothing better to do with you’re time. I was busy looking up these lyrics for kiko before work and now I am in a bad mood. When you decide to make a name for yourself then I’ll hold your opinion with value but until then don’t cloud the internet with this “rubbish” of a review. If you don’t like it say so but after that shut it. I’m off to work, change your ways and grow up like a normal person. Hell you think you’re good enough write, play, record, publish. Make your own album then let other’s criticise it. After that bitch all you want. Have a nice day.
Oh and btw you bitch about the lyrics but fail to mention the meaning the lyrics prtray as a whole. Get Smart and don’t let me see another of your bad excuses’ for a review again.

  • And by the way. The reason most Japanese people mispronounce “l” sounds is due to translation of kanji, katakana, and hiragana. Most words come out this way. even some words come out as the same but with characters that give an r instead of an l sound. Listen to a japanese conversation the notice you barely if at all hear them pronounce anything that starts ends or has an “l” pronounced in it. This is just some help to people I took a little time to explain this point for ignorant mothers who don’t understand! *sigh* thanks pessimistic monster for reminding me.

  • Most of you seem to be neglecting to look at the bigger picture

Lets take a look at Don Maclean’s American Pie
The lyrics do not make much sense but in whole with the music and lyrics it was and is a great song… probably a bit old for most of you… but the song was so Great in fact that it won plenty of song awards… the song was so Great that Don MacLean had to copyright everything about the song including just the name

when the song was remade several years back by Madonna i think it was… she had to get Don’s permission to do her own version of it and Don gets royalties every time a radio station plays either version… he gets royalties when a cd is sold with either version…. if the people who made the American Pie movies never got Don’s permission there would be no American Pie movies…. Don gets the royalties from all American Pie movies and anything in the American Pie franchise

here are the lyrics to American Pie

    A long, long time ago…
    I can still remember
How that music used to make me smile.
And I knew if I had my chance
That I could make those people dance
And, maybe, they’d be happy for a while.

    But february made me shiver
    With every paper I’d deliver.
    Bad news on the doorstep;
I couldn’t take one more step.

    I can’t remember if I cried
When I read about his widowed bride,
But something touched me deep inside
    The day the music died.

    So bye-bye, miss american pie.
Drove my chevy to the levee,
    But the levee was dry.
And them good old boys were drinkin’ whiskey and rye
Singin’, “this’ll be the day that I die.
“this’ll be the day that I die.”

Did you write the book of love,
And do you have faith in God above,
If the Bible tells you so?
Do you believe in rock ’n roll,
Can music save your mortal soul,
And can you teach me how to dance real slow?

Well, I know that you’re in love with him
`cause I saw you dancin’ in the gym.
You both kicked off your shoes.
Man, I dig those rhythm and blues.

I was a lonely teenage broncin’ buck
With a pink carnation and a pickup truck,
But I knew I was out of luck
    The day the music died.

    I started singin’,
    “bye-bye, miss american pie.”
Drove my chevy to the levee,
    But the levee was dry.
Them good old boys were drinkin’ whiskey and rye
And singin’, “this’ll be the day that I die.
“this’ll be the day that I die.”

Now for ten years we’ve been on our own
And moss grows fat on a rollin’ stone,
But that’s not how it used to be.
When the jester sang for the king and queen,
In a coat he borrowed from james dean
And a voice that came from you and me,

Oh, and while the king was looking down,
The jester stole his thorny crown.
    The courtroom was adjourned;
    No verdict was returned.
And while lennon read a book of marx,
The quartet practiced in the park,
And we sang dirges in the dark
    The day the music died.

    We were singing,
    “bye-bye, miss american pie.”
Drove my chevy to the levee,
    But the levee was dry.
Them good old boys were drinkin’ whiskey and rye
And singin’, “this’ll be the day that I die.
“this’ll be the day that I die.”

Helter skelter in a summer swelter.
The birds flew off with a fallout shelter,
Eight miles high and falling fast.
It landed foul on the grass.
The players tried for a forward pass,
With the jester on the sidelines in a cast.

Now the half-time air was sweet perfume
While the sergeants played a marching tune.
We all got up to dance,
Oh, but we never got the chance!
    `cause the players tried to take the field;
The marching band refused to yield.
Do you recall what was revealed
    The day the music died?

    We started singing,
    “bye-bye, miss american pie.”
Drove my chevy to the levee,
    But the levee was dry.
Them good old boys were drinkin’ whiskey and rye
And singin’, “this’ll be the day that I die.
“this’ll be the day that I die.”

Oh, and there we were all in one place,
    A generation lost in space
With no time left to start again.
So come on: jack be nimble, jack be quick!
Jack flash sat on a candlestick
Cause fire is the devil’s only friend.

Oh, and as I watched him on the stage
My hands were clenched in fists of rage.
    No angel born in hell
    Could break that satan’s spell.
And as the flames climbed high into the night
    To light the sacrificial rite,
I saw satan laughing with delight
    The day the music died

    He was singing,
    “bye-bye, miss american pie.”
Drove my chevy to the levee,
    But the levee was dry.
Them good old boys were drinkin’ whiskey and rye
And singin’, “this’ll be the day that I die.
“this’ll be the day that I die.”

I met a girl who sang the blues
And I asked her for some happy news,
But she just smiled and turned away.
I went down to the sacred store
Where I’d heard the music years before,
But the man there said the music wouldn’t play.

And in the streets: the children screamed,
The lovers cried, and the poets dreamed.
    But not a word was spoken;
The church bells all were broken.
And the three men I admire most:
The father, son, and the holy ghost,
They caught the last train for the coast
    The day the music died.

    And they were singing,
    “bye-bye, miss american pie.”
Drove my chevy to the levee,
    But the levee was dry.
And them good old boys were drinkin’ whiskey and rye
Singin’, “this’ll be the day that I die.
“this’ll be the day that I die.”

    They were singing,
    “bye-bye, miss american pie.”
Drove my chevy to the levee,
    But the levee was dry.
Them good old boys were drinkin’ whiskey and rye
Singin’, “this’ll be the day that I die.”

  • Ralph Warren Siegler

actually, I see a slight mismatch between the subtitles and the words of the song I hear, line is not “if it’s for your guys” but “it’s war and you’ll die”. It fits Revy 100%.

  • The lyrics I’d made up for this song didn’t make a whole lot of sense – I thought the official lyrics would be a step up, but not so much. Oh well, I still like the song. :) I hope to watch Black Lagoon someday, too.

  • ありえない歌詞だなw

  • This song sounds rather chinese really, however I do like it.

  • Well…whatever) English not my first language anyway. In addition i’m from Russia so I cared little about lyrics when i listened to it at first time. Speaking of lyrics it’s not that must i say, well i’ve heard faaar worse lyrics so you can say i like this song.

  • the song is cool, the first time I heard it was a long time ago and I think it still rocks. the lyrics? who cares… it’s music, you listen to it and you enjoy it or not. it’s not poetry that you have to figure out for yourself. the lyrics are aggressive which fits the sound, what did you expect? these lyrics fit, it’s not the best I’ve ever seen but it fits and that’s what matters the most.

  • I found it seems to relate to the show more then anything. if u look at in teh way of revy( from Black Lagoon) it fits her mind set. loud cool and crzy making no sense well coming together.

  • It almost seems like it was written just for Black Lagoon

  • TheOneToTeachThemAll

ok….. lets start from the beginning. The difference in the two languages is so very very different that even a correct translation from Japanese to English will still seem a bit mixed up. also if you search up half the opening themes from your favorite animes you WILL most likely find a few bits in english that don’t make alot of sense. and for those of you who don’t like the style of the song….its a very common style in japan. if you’re going to complain about a song for what it is you might as well complain about the anime too or lets whine about the country it comes out of and be a bunch of under-edjucated racist retards while we’re at it.

Plus i think the other funny thing about this particular set of reviews and responses is the subject of whether or not the lyrics to a song matter.

Yes. Yes they do. They always matter. unless you’re some sort of ignorant fuck head that sniffs paint for a living(cuz then i could see how they wouldn’t matter since nothing else really does at that point).

    So here’s my thought.

lets cut the idiocy down to zero and turn this review into:

“The song was okay. The words are hard to understand.”

And done. was that so hard? probably, considering alot of you are so dense you feel you need to treat a song like the guy in school you always wanted to punch in the balls til he spit them out his mouth.

    Grow up retards.

  • I like the song. And lyrics ALWAYS matter to me. They get stuck in my head, so if they suck, so does my day. I can honestly say that I can think of worse songs to get stuck in my head.

  • Hm. I’m completely agree with TheOneToTeachThemAll (omg. Amazing nickname hahaha).

I’m from Spain. My English isn’t perfect, either than my japanese. I’ve only learnt English in school, but I’m learning japanese by my own way. If you try to learn Japanese, you’ll get surprised. They don’t have “l” or words which ending isn’t with alargment (does this word exists? O_o) of the vocals.

There are japanese people that speaks good English. But they’re been studying it since they were kids. If someone that haven’t spoke a different language than their own, CAN’T speak it PERFECT.

So, try to think on it ;)

    Bye~!

  • much appreciatedtab seems just like the band

  • I’m listening to the G.M.S Remix right now. That’s, like, the best upbeat song ever (my first favorite song is One Summer’s Day) This fights so perfectly with Black Lagoon, especially since the first line in the whole song is “I’ve got a big gun.” That anime is basically full of guns, cussing, pirates, and beer.

  • Every time I stumble upon a great blog post I go ahead and do one of three thing:1.Show it to the close friends.2.Bookmark it in all of the popular social sharing websites.3.Make sure to return to the same website where I read the post. After reading this article I’m really concidering doing all of the above!

  • you people are all fucked in the head.

  • I really enjoy the song, I can see why most people say the lyrics make no sense, and maybe it just takes a genius to work out that its a very angry lustful song, really pay more attention to the lyrics, you still might not understand the lyrics but maybe get a better feeling for the song. Fits the show like a glove.

  • I found this an informative and intriguing blog page. Thank you.
