The Evolution of Otonashi Saya: Lost Those Fuzzy Eyebrows

Ok there’s no more cosplay here. This post is inspired by episode 34 of Blood+, where Saya shows up with a new hairdo and arsenal of fanboy-wetting facial expressions. I realised that she looked like crap before, and went through the Blood movie, first few episodes, middle eps to get some picture samples.

I haven’t slept for about two days so I can barely type at the moment.

I shall start with the out-of-control berserker Saya in the intro of episode 1. Here she looks bloodied, scary and demonised, with long Sadako-ish black hair, sharp eyes, pink pupils and a very pointed face. Ugly. I don’t dig m4d chickz.

This was Saya back in her infancy, prior to awakening. With slightly wavy long hair, shorter eyebrows and rounder eyes, Saya looks innocently ojou-style cute here. Her nose and mouth are quite small too. Bishoujo stage. Did they pluck eyebrows back in those days? Cos she really needs to.

The movie version of Saya is just amazing. Amazingly ugly, that is. With a pair of hideous pig tails and black man lips, not to mention beady (for anime at least) eyes and a foul temper, it’s no wonder the movie crashed and burned. This was the original Saya though.

Find me an uglier female lead.

Hey, the spawn of Shaman King’s Chocolove and Ayano from Girls’ High

At the start of the TV series, Saya was a ditzy glutton who knew only of high jump and food. This was reflected by her really short and thick eyebrows. It got so bad that I wanted to quit watching because the protagonist had ugly eye brows. What Ep 1 Saya retained of Movie Saya were the thick lips to some extent and the hair colour. Every else’s different. Compared to berserker Saya, she has shorter hair, thinner and shorter eyebrows, rounder eyes and smaller mouth. She also looks slimmer than Ancient Saya. I was alright with this hairstyle but the eyebrows gahhh.

This picture’s a good one. Innocent eyes combo well with wicked blades.

This is where we start seeing Saya lose her roundedness for a sharper look. Great.

Slowly, we see Saya growing into a stronger and less child-like character as the series progresses. But the damn eyebrows still stuck. It wasn’t until the ship explosion and after Riku’s death that she finally decided to pluck the damn caterpillars. Took you long enough. The current Saya now has a really cool hairstyle, longer than her old one and a floppy lop-sided fringe. I like her new hair a lot more. One of the old girlfriends used to have this exact same hair!

Saya’s eyes are a lot sharper now especially at the edges and she looks a lot more intelligent because of that. No more the clueless confused school kid, she’s now a full fledged vampire slayer. An angsty one too.

Blood+ just got a hell lot more enjoyable now that I don’t have to fidget and avert my eyes just to not be disturbed by a pair of black hairy butterfly babies stuck on the main lead’s head.

Barely recognisable from the designs of the earlier episodes.

Her tough demeanor is in stark constrast with the really adorable sleep appearance.

Back to the old days of Blood the Last Vampire.

This is where the old her would’ve had round eyes. Here, Saya still has sharp ones.

The pissed-off look is quite cute.

Here, the overpowered dominator silent evil mode wins.

  • It feels so long ago since I started watching Blood but the feeling that Saya’s changed has always been there but I wouldn’t have been able to point out what had changed exactly. Now I know. :D

I think crazy Saya is kinda cool though. ^^

  • Okay, your Saya fetish scares me.

And heck, it’s been ages since I watched Blood . I dropped it at episode 20

  • “With a pair of hideous pig tails and black man lips…” Black man lips, I see…

This is the very epitome of political incorrect expression, NAACP will be after you soon.

    Rainy

  • Perhaps if you actually understand the acronyms you put out… N stands for National. Perhaps if you read more and offend yourself less, you’ll have realised I’m not from the place.

Lol my yellow man eyes are even smaller now, smiling at this.

  • Lmao, at least you gave him the impression that you were from ah-ma-ree-ka.

  • Yeah, I don’t appreciate that “black man lips” comment. It’s a bit offensive. Whatever race you are, I doubt you would like someone making fun of a certain feature of yours. And eyebrows?! Wth, who cares. Ugly eyebrows… umm, sure. The whole post just wasn’t funny at all.

  • The whole “black mans lips” comment was offensive, you bitch.

  • Wow…thank you so much for pointing out these revolutionary evolutions of Saya. I must say that your post was very informative and well written. I guess that the repetitive reference to her eyebrows must have been either you have a deep psychological issue with eyebrows or because of your claims of having barely any sleep for two days. I suppose that could also be the reasoning behind your racist comment.
You really have made this post a factual one, keeping your opinions to yourself. I must say thats is a hard one to do! Maybe next time you could give us your opinion on the evolution of the animation of Saya instead of the bare facts. After all, who can resist a bias opinion from someone who clearly has absolutely no idea about art or anime?
    I sure can’t!

Thanks for wasting your life and ours on this, the gheyest post i have ever read.

    ^_^

    Sarcastically yours,

    Jade.

  • I read this, and all I keep hearing his big eyebrows, and that’s bull.
Saya’s eyebrows aren’t huge at all! I have seen eyebrows that are hairier than a catepillar and Saya’s isn’t even close to it.
Also “black man lips”?, I hope you’re aware of how much those words made you sound like such a racially stereotyping fool.

  • i don’t see what the big deal about saying ‘black man lips’ i’m sure a black man would read this and be very proud. he’s not saying that that’s a bad thing, it just looked bad on Saya. ugh, i remember seeing the movie and i was like wtf. she was so ugly, i’m thankful they made her prettier in the anime.

  • I don’t understand you at all. The movie version of Saya is the best. At least (if its possible) she’s more realistic looking in the more. And the movie although very short, and lacking in background story, is a better viewing than any of the episodes from the series. Saya is such a wimp in the series. I’m so tire of her gasping and sounding weak. I have not finished the series yet hopefully she becomes half the Saya from the movie.

BTW. The movie was very well received and did not crash and burn.

  • hey where did you get these images at or did you make them yourself? and there awsome bTw, been looking for reference pics to use and these are perfect just wished there was more :3

  • This is for the one who thinks Saya’s appearance in the movie was not good,……YOU SUCK! I think she is too cutsie, cutsie in the BLOOD anime series.

  • I find black-man lips to be somewhat offensive myself, but I’m not sure that “full lipped” would be a more accurate description. Anyhow, I agree with you that 1800s Saya is a little fatter (as much as she could ever gain weight) but that’s probably because the idealized feminine body type in Europe back then was one with a little more curvature to it than the way it is in the modern world.

Personally I find “Crazed Berzerker Saya” (picture 1) and Ancient Saya (in the 1800s) the most interesting, unlike you I am quite a fan of the crazed half-wild Saya. Was movie Saya originally supposed to be Vietnamese? Because the skin tone and structure hint that to me more than anything else. I do like the Cold-As-Ice Saya (the latest one) except I am annoyed that she’s not wearing pants. Her outfit seems to be one where pants would work quite well and it’s really distracting to me in a bad-design way.

Of course I’m sure I’ll get tagged with being racist for saying the Vietnamese thing!

  • ok…. i think you pay too much attention to the eyebrows. seriously, who gives a fuck about them. Saya back in the old days was freakin’ gorgeous. :|

and the new saya…. oh so hot.

  • I think that Saya was really diferent in the 1800 and know that she doesn´t remembre nothing she is just like in the beinging like Saya Otonashi. But in the other side Diva was just a victam in this battle because she lived in a cage all her life and she didn´t get the love that Saya got.

  • Hahaha. I love all the NOT BLACK PEOPLE getting pissy about the black lips comment. You make valid points. It comes of a little shallow, but it’s not like shes REAL. She’s a friggin anime character and can be critiqued. Art is meant to be analyzed without all you people getting bitchy. This is funny.

  • I didn’t mind her eyebrows so much as her SUPER UGLY GOLDFISH SLOBBERY TRYING TO BE CUTESY LIPS in the anime. URRRGGG. I did notice her eyebrows on a few occasions, but in comparison to the lips, they didn’t really matter.
I got into Blood by watching the Aozora no Namida PV, and her lips weren’t so noticeable there. So I decided to give it a try, and my first impression of seeing Saya’s real lips was URRGGGG. After watching 12 episodes, Says still strikes me as unpleasant looking. I usually grow to enjoy an art style after being exposed to it for a long time, but something about Saya’s disgusting lips gets to me every time I see her.

  • The anime movie version pales in comparison to the anime series in everything – the plot, the characters, the backstory – not just in Saya’s depiction.

  • How about the UGLY they used for the live action?

  • I disagree with a large part of your analysis.
