Nerds Make the Best Boyfriends. FACT!

I know most of us here are nerds. And single. But why? Nerds make great boyfriends, as expertly pointed out by this article which I’ve reproduced here. My  own comments are in red. Naturally, the article is full of generalisations and assumptions but taking the average, it’s a pretty damn spot-on.

Reproduced from the Best of Craig’s List:

In the wide world of dating, there are many options. Do you go for the flashy guy with the smooth smile, or the dude in the corner typing away on his laptop? The following are reasons why I think my fellow females should pay more attention to the quiet geeks and nerds, and less attention to the flashy boys.

1.) While geeks and nerds may be awkward, they’re well-meaning 9 out of 10 times. That smooth dude with the sly grin and the spider hands? Wonder what HIS intentions are… plus, I’ve never had a geek guy not call me when he said he would. Score major points THERE.

Nerds are idealistic in general. This is because they are always indulging in fantasy worlds, where osananajimis, childhood promises and other sweet anime cliches prevail. This means their standards are generally in sync with the sincere and selfless fictional characters of say Honey and Clover, Love Hina etc.

2.) They’re useful. In this tech-savvy world, it’s great to have a b/f who can make your laptop, desktop, and just about anything else that plugs into a wall behave itself.

This is very true. In fact, as I’m writing this, the wife complains that "my IE just crashed. I lost all my pictures. I can’t use firefox cos when it saves pictures, there’s a 30 second hang." To which the reply is, "Check your downloads tab and click the cleanup button." If it was a normal guy, the answer would probably be, "UH? Farriire fux? Is that some animal?"

3.) They’re more romantic than they’re given credit for. Ok true, their idea of romance might be to make up a spiffy web-page with all the reasons why they love you, with links to pics of you and sonnets and such… but hey. It lasts longer than flowers, plus you can show your friends.

In this day and age, where capitalistic romance is the norm and romanticism is measured in dollars, we splendid nerds are always creative and unique in our expressions of romance. For example, we may print a 150 cm body pillow of the wife and hug it to sleep.

4.) Due to their neglected status, there are plenty to choose from. You like ‘em tall and slender? There are plenty of geeks/nerds who are. You like ‘em smaller with more meat on their bones? Got that too.

This is very true. Nerds come in all shapes and sizes and generally, all are available for selection.

5.) They’ve got brains. Come on now, how can intelligence be a bad thing?

Nerds actually know more about safe sex,  sexually transmitted diseases, the menstrual cycle and its driving hormones, than most people. Even girls. Then there are regular folks who write in to magazines asking if "his girlfriend will get pregnant if she drinks his sperm".

6.) Most are quite good at remembering dates. Like birthdates and such, especially if they know it’ll make you happy. Due again to their neglected status, they’re more attentive than guys who “have more options”. Plus, with all that down time without a steady girlfriend, they’ll likely have mental lists of all the things they’d love to do once they GOT a girlfriend.

And all the hentai and anime we watch gives us lots of ideas.

7.) Sex. Yep. Sex. I’m not really familiar with this myself, but I’ve friends who’ve been intimate with geek guys and it’s raves all around. They say a virgin wrote the Kama Sutra… all that time thinking about sex, imagining sex, dreaming about sex, (they are male after all) coupled with a desire to make you happy? Use your imagination.

Again, it’s all the Japanese AV and hentai.

8.) They’re relatively low-maintenance. Most can be fueled on pizza, Twinkies and Mt Dew. No complicated dinners needed here, so if you’re not the best cook, eh. Can you order a pizza?

I loled at this point. When was the last time us nerds visited a restaurant? As Madarame says, "eating is a luxury." We are thrifty creatures when it comes to living expenses.

9.) Most frequent bars as often as slugs frequent salt mines. You won’t have to worry much about your geek guy getting his “groove” on with club hotties because, frankly, he’ll be too busy rooting around under his computer wondering where that spare cable went. You won’t have to worry about him flirting with other women because, 9 out of 10 times, he’ll zip right by them in a perfect b-line towards the nearest electronics store. I’ve seen this happen.
Me: “Eww. Victoria Secret’s Models… They’re so skinny. How is that feminine? You can see her ribs!”
Geek Guy: “ooooooo…”
Me: “Hey!” *notices he is staring lustfully towards the computer store*
Geek Guy: “What?”
Me: “Never mind…”

I have never clubbed before in my life. Only the occasional (annual) pub visit for football viewing. Most nerds are also homely, we’ll much prefer staying at home than going out especially to crowded places. You know the nerd mentality is all about picking one girl, just look at all eroge. There may be a harem but there’s always only one girl per route. And for School Days, if you don’t make up your mind, they kill you. So yeah, loyalty is the nerd way.

10.) Although he may not want to go to every outing with you, you can arrange swaps, as in, you’ll go to his Gamer Con dressed as an elf princess if he’ll take you to the ballet. Plus, if he doesn’t want to go someplace with you, you won’t have to worry much about what he’s up to. You’ll probably come home to find him asleep on his keyboard in a sea of Mt. Dew cans with code blinking from the screen. It’s ok. He’s used to this. Just toss a blanket over him and turn out the light.

As stated, nerds like to stay at home. We also don’t get lonely at all because we’ve been alone for most of our lives in a room. Not sitting and playing bingo — important stuff like scripting and DD character creation. So girls don’t get any of this stickiness and possessiveness that some other guys have. And yeah, other guys find cosplayers weird. We find them very very hot.

11.) His friends aren’t jerks. I can’t stress this enough. You’ll more likely get “Omg! A GIRL!! Can I see?!” than “Hey hot stuff back that ass up here and let me get some grub on…” They’re awkward geeks too and will, 9 times out of 10, treat you with the utmost respect and, more than likely, a note of awe. A cute girl picked one of their clan to date? It could happen to them! Hope! Drag some of your single girlfriends over, open up a pack of Mt. Dew, crack open the DnD set and get working. Nothing impresses geek guys more than a girl who can hack-n-slash (well ok maybe if she can code… a geek can dream).

This is sooo true. :D .

12.) They’re rarely if ever possessive. They trust you, so you can be yourself around them. You like to walk around the house in a ratty t-shirt for comfort? He won’t care. He does too! They won’t get pissy if you don’t wear make-up or don’t want to bother primping your hair. If you gain a few pounds, they won’t try their best to make you feel like crap.

Nerds don’t dress up. And they can’t really tell what is fashion. Anything looks perfectly fine. In fact, rags are MOE. Skirts and leggings are MOE. Gothic is MOE. Casual is MOE. Swimsuit is MOE. School Uniform is MOE.

13.) They’re usually very well educated. Physics majors and the like. See #5. You won’t have to listen to him blathering on about his car (ok maybe a little), he’ll have loads of other interesting things to talk about. Politics, world events, how much the chicken burgers down at the local place rock, so long as you douse them in hot sauce…

If you look at #animeblogger channel, which is full of geeks, you’ll notice that half have degrees while the other half are in college. Then if you look at #teens or something, 90% of the people there are dropouts doing odd jobs.

14.) You’ll almost never have to hear, “Yaw dawg whazzap!!” plop out of their mouths. Unless it’s in jest. They spell properly, use correct punctuation, and are able to tell the difference between the toilet and the floor. They almost never get “wasted”, so you won’t have to worry about coming home to find him and his friends passed out on the floor amidst a pile of beer bottles. Mt. Dew cans, perhaps…

We don’t ever type like, "y00 h0u r u 2daE, mi feeLZZ veri siAnzzz lehx." It’s disgraceful. And most of us don’t drink, smoke or indulge in other vices. Besides masturbation.

15.) And the final reason why geeks and nerds make great boyfriends: They actually give a damn about you. Not how you look (though that’s a plus), not how skinny you are, not how much make-up you primp yourself up with, but they like you for you. That kind of thing lasts longer than “DaMN baby you got a fine ass!!!” Believe me.

This is because of scarcity. Nerds have it hard when it comes to getting girlfriends so they treasure them a lot more. It’s like how affluent people can’t finish their food and toss them away but the starving in Africa will lick every grain up.

So girls, what are you waiting for? Get a nerdy boyfriend now!

  • I’m single and available.

You may wish to contact me at

    A girl is fine, too.

  • I sooooo agree with tj on this entry… NERDS all the WAY!!!!

  • This is so true … it’s actually the best article I’ve read here, tj. :D

Anyway, despite the fact that a lot of people in #animeblogger are crackpots (including me), yes, we can talk about serious stuff if a lot of us are serious in a given time. But maybe I’m just sour … I’m single, after all.

  • Nothing that says how nerdy you are!?!

  • LAWL

Girls, it’s time to stop looking at the hot dude with the pearly-whites. Or you may end up like Britney Spears. (Fuck ass crazy) Or Anna Nicole Smith (Dead).

  • Kwok just posted his email for more spam than ever.

  • hahhaah, it’s an interesting article to say the very least though they forget that the title seems more like a search for a husband rather than a boyfriend. In the old ode of relationships, a bad boy for a boyfriend, a boring one for a husband.

    Maybe, that is true.

  • Unfortunately reality is cruel. I think this conclusion of this clip says it all too well.

    *Warning – NSFW. Sexual themes.

  • LOL.
    and i love nerds.
especially the one who typed this post. =D

  • sh90: Your boyfriend here fails as a nerd. You have yet to seen the worst, you’ll probably take those words back. Rofl.

But I disagree with point 10. I believe when thrusted with a girlfriend, any first-timer will and naturally be over possesive of their girlfriends. It’s only after a couple of relationships that one will learn how to trust and let go.

  • Tsub: That’s not true. A lot of my friends are first timers and they all got it. Cos they started late. Most of your friends probably started very early and were not emotionally mature.

  • Ahahahaha. I seem to have read this type of list before, except replace “nerds” with “engineer”. (well that was then. I’m on my way to study the human body, lol)

Funny entry. We may be old school, but we stay true to our significant other if need be.

Me 1 single. Me 0 girl. Me want! :P

  • Sounds about right. I also find even the nerds that didn’t go to college are more informed than normal.

  • I LOLed. xD Great (and quite true, I’d say) article.

  • Best read of the night. Although with today’s culture, or should I say at the point of mature age, people are seeing nerds as just regular people. It’s only at times like high school is when you see that gap of social status.

  • The truest article so far. Is truest a word, anyway?

  • Heck yeah! Go nerds, w00t!

  • …not w00t, I mean self acknowledging cheer.

  • Yeah! Nerds all the way! XD

  • Very funny and true. The thing is, I’m actually picky: I prefer girls that think like the one who wrote this article. Hot girls who party and ignore me? Pass. Quiet girl (who’s often very hot as well, mostly due to her quiet moeness) in corner checking you out or having a pleasant conversation with you? -suki-

  • woohoo…even densha otoko can get a rich girl..why not us? lol…and, is there a nerd test? i wanna take iT to be a certified nerd…

  • NERD power FTW lol!

  • “Most nerds are also homely…”

While this statement may be true, see definition below:

    home·ly (hōm’lē)
    adj., -li·er, -li·est.
    1. Not attractive or good-looking: a homely child.
    2. Lacking elegance or refinement: homely furniture.
    3. Of a simple or unpretentious nature; plain: homely truths.

I suspect that your intended meaning was closer to:

    “Most nerds are homebodies…”

    home·bod·y (hōm’bŏd’ē)
    n., pl. -ies.
    1.   a person who seldom goes anywhere; one not given to wandering or travel
    Synonym: stay-at-home

Regardless, this was a good article and the little nitpick which I had was not
    without humor as well.

  • This article depictes most of the reasons why nerds are great boyfriends, but it fails to point out certain things.

For example, how nerds tend to spend all their time on their computer, playing, coding, whatever, instead of seeing their g/f’s. I can’t count how many times I was late for a date for playing Ragnarok Online, fixing my computer or coding something.
And I mean, I’ve had 2 girlfriends in 5 years and even though for the first 4 to 6 months that didn’t happen, I eventually ended up doing it for the sake of lvling up.

Another bad thing about dating nerds is that they might eventually try to force their taste of things into you. Like, watching anime, playing Q3 or something like that.

We usually are pretty shy or don’t talk much, and for first timers, it could be very hard for them to express their feelings and girlfriends hate not to know what the hell is going on with you.

Finally, if your girlfriend takes you to a birthday party or something of one of her friends, and you have to encounter dozens of normal people, you won’t talk much and she will eventually hate the fact that you don’t socialize at all and how her parents hate the quiet ones… oh, and how she will BREAK YOUR FUCKING HEART BECAUSE SHE COULDN’T STAND YOU WASTING 2 HOURS OF YOUR WEEK PLAYING A FREAKING WAR OF EMPERIUM OR FUCKING WITH HER BEST FRIEND.

The secret is to date another nerd/geek. Someone who can understand your nature, what Bankai is, how much you love playing that special MMORPG (she might end up loving it too), watching weird retro japanese movies, why you listen to japanese music even if you don’t understand 98% of what their saying, etc… aw, I love my girlfriend :3

  • AHHHH this post is turning into an abode for the delusional and the winners. Lol.

Lux: The truth about this post is that, it’s pretty much sweet talk. It sounds good to allnerds hence everyone’s praising it to the skies.

The fact is, even if you’re a nerd, you still need a certain degree of social skills.

And yeah, nerd girlfriends really rock. I strongly recommend one. The thing is, nerd girlfriends aren’t as rare as people think they are. You just have to look in the right places.

mochi: You’re right lol, I meant to say homebody. But I wasn’t wrong either was I.

Stripey: Now that was a funny movie.

  • I know too many nerds to read this without a million exceptions flying to mind. Since basically everyone at my uni qualifies. But I think it has some truth in spirit.

  • You forgot to mention the part where nerd guys hardly ever BATHE, SHOWER, or wear DEODORANT. You also overlooked the fact that most nerd guys are catty, controlling, know-it-alls, who cry little bitch tears because they can’t figure out why no girls like them. They also expect some perfect woman to fall out the sky and kiss the very ground they tread upon because they don’t want to put forth any effort to get a girl (you know like wearing okay clothes or BATHING).

So maybe you want to, uh, squeeze that little tidbit in there.

  • That’s why you go out and date a geek instead of a nerd. They’re a step up in that they are able to socialize outside of their circles when needed and cares for good hygiene and exquisite food. I’m dating a really sexyhot one… ^o^ When I first saw him, I decided that I had to GET da ze. I mean, it’s still rare to run across an attractive-looking specimen who retains a high level of intelligence. Good times… Good times…

  • ROFLMAO This post put a huge grin on my face.
And this…. is why I’m dating JPmeyer. :D

  • It’s a glorification of nerdiness, that’s for sure. Ashley, that’s not true albeit very funny.

Atashi: He’s a lucky nerd. Aren’t you a hot cosplayer?

Hinano: Stop showing off your prize catch! lol.

  • @Hinano But JPmeyer is a hot geek. He’s on TV!

  • hmmmmmmmm nerds might become valuable. Think i gonna capture one or two on the jungle and sell on ebay :)

  • Sod it, TJhan, now I’ve spent the last thirty minutes in the lab reading best of Craig’s List!

  • I’m all for nerd boyfriends so long as they pick nerd girlfriends ^_^ –there are lots of us who are single too. (And as an obvious sidenote, though I know a number of very cool geeky guys, I’ve also known a few who have none of the good qualities mentioned.)

  • Keep dreaming.

  • I think I’d feel awkward or something with a normal guy. I’ll have to hope that a guy with all the points above is easy to find when I start dating. Nerds make the best girlfriends!

  • >>>Most nerds are also homely

Homely means fugly. Homey means cozy. Nope, not a nerd here.

  • Damn right Teej! I feel it that way too especially #9. To tell ya, I only go out to look for computer parts or taking care of the shop. I spend most of my time staring at my pc in my room, my friends find me weird. do you consider online gamers a geek?

  • At first this all made sense and I started to question society, then I realized…

That’s right! Women don’t use logic!

  • This is pure win.

I’m going to print this and hand it out as pamphlets on a busy street. See you later.

  • LOL, u teh winz, though I prefer bachelorhood

BTW is masturbation a vice, when the alternative to masturbation such as get a real gal, go whorehouse, rape somebody or abstinence are all either bad or worse?

  • Meh.. Its not that big of a deal now, Seeing as 76% of the teenage population are nerds/and or spend atleast over three hours of their day playing on the computer. Theres alot of hot nerdy girls out there.
Like, They are common. You just dont realize it because you rarely show interest in looking at their pics and such

  • O.O School days is a totally bad example of something to relate to reality. Besides, haven’t you seen the 「二人の恋人」 ending before? Not exactly dedicated on one girl, ahem.

anyhow, thanks for the post, you saved me from the boredom of a 2 hour econs tutorial as we speak. Nevertheless i have to criticise some of the comments made by the repliers as too specific.

  • The most telling part of the article is when the author admits that they actually don’t really know too much about being intimate with nerds/geeks–”oh, but my friends have!”
It sounds nice in theory, but in reality most would prefer it if their GAR bf adopted a few more geekier tendancies, rather than turn into one. In the words of the immortal Yamazaki: “Go to hell bitches!”

And besides, if you’re a geek it can be a real pain finding any sort of compelling common ground with regular peons.

  • Well, this is kind of stereotypical. I go to an advanced high school program thing, so I know a lot of those smart nerd/geeks. Some are lovely, while others are cocky bastards. There is a junior I know named Rick, and he’s so adorable in the strangest way. Not attractive, really skinny and tall, but sweet yet overly unsocial. One of the really cute happy-go-lucky girls in my class would always try to flirt with him, and he wouldn’t even bat an eye. Ahaha.

But those are generally just nerds that I know IRL. I’ve never liked a geek, except for people who could be considered partly otaku. But I deffinately see an atractiveness in the personality of an Otaku, just because they would be able to understand me a lot more. And I’d be able to talk to them about so many more things, especially real otaku. I like MOE too!

I’ve known some really disgusting geeks too, but I wont get into that. They are not considered as part of the human race to me.

  • Wow, I didn’t know how like a geek I was! Aside from the loving my computer and being on it contantly, and the anti-social attitude, that pretty much hits the nail right on the head.

  • its just so fucking true i think hes watching me lol way to go dude. VIVa la nerds

  • this post is so beyond true.

[why do i have a feeling i'm one of the only girls who responded?]

  • HAHAHAHAHA all you nerds keep dreaming. You’ll never get a hot girlfriend! You guys should stick to your WoW shit and anime porn. You all suck.

–That’s what some guy and his dick faced jock friend said to me back in high school. I’ve resented it ever since. Talk NERDY to me for life!

  • Preach to the choir, brotha.

I don’t think I’d feel quite at home with a significant other who’s not geeky, so I’m not exactly in a rush to obtain such a relationship. But then again, it may be perhaps because I already have my bishoujo…>.> That’s otaku status for ya, right there.

  • “Check your downloads tab and click the cleanup button.” — Hahaha! I had the same problem ages ago! And now guess who it was who found the solution…

And oooh, I can code. Am I every nerds dream girlfriend now? XD (I suck at games though.)

I actually disagree with the last point. Not because I don’t think that nerds are that way, but because I doubt any girl would be satisfied for only “being loved as she is” like that. Or to say it like that: I couldn’t stand a boyfriend who does NOT say “Damn baby you got a fine ass!”

Like Ronin pointed out, I also think that this list applies to engineers pretty well too – except for that I would never ever date an engineer. I see them all day and most often, my impression of them is even worse than of business career types (a cliché that too many people seem to fulfill and that I dislike as well). *hrr*

All in all, this post is made of win.

  • The problem is finding the right girl for us nerds/otakus though….

I DO NOT want to end up with a bitch/gold digger/trophy wife types. Also, I prefer a degree of intelligence as well, no airheads for me :P .

  • hey good job hyping up us nerds! long may we prosper!

  • Oh, lolz, haha, still, it’s kinda hard to think that anyone in #animeblogger will ever pick up a gf…

  • I have a semi-nerd loli gf and it rocks.

Of course, for me, hugging her is a vice, so..

  • hahahahhahaha…

This is a very nice entry…

    Very informative!…

  • To tj_han,

    Woohooo…… best article ever.
    Point GET!

  • Im a nerd (And a girl) so I think that’s why I prefer nerds, I hate guys who can’t use their computer for stuff other than pOrn…well nerds do that too but those girls aren’t real so you won’t have to worry about them cheating on you.

    Some nerds are hot too!

  • I agree with Kurogane here. Finding the right girl is the key to everything, though based on standards, it might take a long while to find the one. :P

    Funny article though. :3

  • I thought the reason a lot of us learn Japanese is so we don’t have to bother with this girlfriend bullshit?
    Bishoujo games FTW \o/

  • Wow, great article. Loled alot.
    Thumbs up!

  • lol. nice one.
    “siAnzzz lehx”
    what the heck is that??

  • LOL quite true!!

Btw, Otaku means nerd and its not a good word. Go japan and say your an otaku and the japanese will not talk to you. It just simply mean nerd and they dont like nerds.

    Anyways, Geeks ftw! :D

  • This list is older than the internets, if you call yourself a nerd or geek or anything similiar and this is your first time seeing this, you fail as one. LURK MOAR bitches.

  • Fun article lol. I’m definitely a nerd guy, and although most of your points are true, you basically failed to mention any of the down sides of dating someone like me haha. Oh btw the mountain dew and pizza diet stereotype annoys me to no end :D Some of us take care of ourselves lol.

  • @Mr. Mercurial:

    “siAnzz lehx”

Colloquial Singaporean term, to mean bored. An example of Singlish. xD

    Translation: Very bored.

  • hmmmmm i aint really a nerd and i dont really have the looks of it… but yeah great article ya got there!! ^_^ this is pure gold hehe!! i’m just a smart boy who’s just slacking off at school and get high grades all the time XD but recently i havent been really social since i’ve got into anime for 4 months >.

  • Woah. Pretty acurate description. Well…I’m not that sure about the “remembering dates” thing. Their mind (and mine too, why not) are always faaar away. But is definately better if both are geeks. Playing videogames, watching anime, going to cons (maybe cosplaying together). That has to be awesome. Anyway, congrats for te post!

  • Then again, it depends what kind of nerd you’re thinking of – not all nerds happen to fit the bill even to almost a T. Hopefully he’s not one too obsessed with schoolwork or hobbies. Or one who forgets to shower.

  • Thank you!
My boyfriend is a “nerd” and he is the most amazing person. Also…once you start dating them, you realize just how hot they are! He’s not an anime person, but he does really sweet things like: once, I went to a different room at school to practice my violin during lunch, and I ended up sobbing. Anyways, he came b/c he wanted to hear me play instead of competing in this marathon online game (his favourite) and stayed to chat, because he’d rather talk to me than do anything else.

  • “But I disagree with point 10. I believe when thrusted with a girlfriend, any first-timer will and naturally be over possesive of their girlfriends. It’s only after a couple of relationships that one will learn how to trust and let go. ” – Tsubaki

    Agree with Tsubaki here..btw,nice article tj_han ^^

  • whoa… I laughed so much when reading this article that I’m actually glad my flatmates aren’t around to look at me wierd.

I’m kinda between social classifications at the moment (there are those who say I’m a nerd–”get off your laptop girl; and stop calling it your bf”; and there are those that go “hell no way you’re a nerd–you’re too active”), so as I went down the list on what ‘nerdy’ people are supposed to be like (read: stickler for grammar, crazy about any game that involves technology and probably leveling-up, total-anime/manga-fan, cosplay addict, deeply in love with words and word-manipulation, among others) I had to say… “oooh yes that’s me… hey that’s me too… mm I’m definitely a nerd then? COOL…” …. (cue for cold wind to blow through and spin a stray leaf across the air?)

Back to my opinion on the article: Nerds are Hot. Totally. And that’s just the guys, XD. I myself have always liked the quiet, nerdy type with glasses who are either reading or tinkering away at his laptop… in almost every anime my favourite character would be the one that closest represents a Nerd–Ootori Kyouya from Ouran High is the latest in a line that begun with Cho Hakkai in Gensoumaden Saiyuki. (cue: MOE cry, and fainting spell of rabid fangirls)

The sad thing is, I never manage to find out where these guys hang out… and whenever I see one, it’s usually in a Do-Not-Disturb kind of situation, eg in the Library under the “Please Be Quiet” sign, typing casually in the computer lab while other students hammer feverishly at the very assignment he completed days ago, asking about games or new hardware at the computer shop, and… hmmm, don’t remember where else. (That would usually be when I’m in a STUDYING mode or LOCATE ITEM mode.)

Any guys out there who can offer me a good place to visit when I’m in HUNT mode? I’d be forever in your debt, and… I’ll even consider cosplaying as whatever you suggest, during the next Melbournian Manifest? Hey this is an offer that you can NOT pass up =P

  • Zephyrlight: You just have to look in 3 places.

    1. Online in more “intellectual” channels of anime discussion, like forums or blogs.
    2. Online.
    3. Online.

Basically these guys are always online. LOL. Introverts don’t do well meeting strangers offline.

  • @ tj_han:

I know the feeling (of not being able to relax around strangers IRL). I used to be an introvert too… before I got in with the uh, rowdy crowd.

Sometimes I try to do some HUNTing (>.>”) in RP (role-playing) groups, forums and such… but those who seemed decent, i.e. seemed to be the type I like (and not some bored kid who thought “ooh this seems interesting” and proceeded to irritate the hell out of the other RPers with his inane sentences and overblown god-moding egoistic ways) were usually all… either females in disguise, or romantically attached (T.T) I just can’t manage to get to the nerds first… LOLZ. They ARE in high demand… someplaces.

And the anime discussion forums that I go to… or rather, scanlation sites… are bigger on girls than on guys. Bleh. Can’t do much fishing there, BUT the eye-candy can be drool-worthy at times… (read: the manga, and the anime, and the DPs.)

As things stand, I might have to expand my search to other nerd-hotspots–*bats lashes*– would you happen to have any links that you can forward to me?

  • Lol, you sound desperate. This site has a 70 percent male readership, the IRC has a 90 percent male population and etc.. but I suppose the best way is through mutual friend introductions and conventions in your area. Befriend nerd friends who can introduce you to their other nerd friends.

  • …grrr something ate my previous post and spit out only half of it…

    @ tj_han:

well I’m not really desperate >.> at least, I HOPE I’m not!! (rotflmao)

I couldn’t manage to get my MIRC to work, therefore, on one frustrated evening a few weeks ago, I killed the program >.> I doubt that I want to go though that painfull process of broken hopes again, so… that’s an unavailable option? *weeps*

As for nerd-pals… hell, if I KNEW any male nerds I’d be delving into their records and keeping tabs on their everyday activities by now >.

  • …continued from the above post because apparently one of my emoticons kills the post. Hmm. ‘right then…

As for nerd-pals… hell, if I KNEW any male nerds I’d be delving into their records and keeping tabs on their everyday activities by now. Frankly speaking, even though this is uni (or BECAUSE this is uni and they’ve evolved) the local nerds seem to be possessed of a weird ability to render themselves invisible whenever I try to locate one. AND the self-proclaimed nerd that I enjoy bugging doesn’t seem to have any friends of the sort–

Question: if nerds only hang around nerds, then how would I get into their circle when I’m being as active as I currently am in… certain areas of school?

–so that seems to be yet another no-go.

(does this make me desperate? o.o)

Perhaps I’d better just hang around Ruiva more (T.T)…

  • zepyhrlight: Lol… the lack of mirc ability means you are not nerd/geek enough! Anyway I find it unbelievable that there aren’t male nerds in sight… maybe Australia is a gungho land of rugby players. But here in Singapore, there are as many nerds as jocks.. and the jocks do nerd stuff like gaming a lot too.

Surely at your university there are clubs like the math or computing society. Or even anime club.

  • @ tj_han:

…that does it, I’m studying my MIRC volumes again =P death to any computer glitch that dares try to stop me!!

I know a few Singaporeans, but they are elusive at best as well, and mainly jocks. The only times I happen to see them (the more active ones in particular) is during… SAM meetings, which equates to the Singaporean Association of Monash XD I guess that means I should try to enter the Gen Comm for that? At least it gives me a legit excuse to subtly check out the guys as well as grab their email addresses for nerd-screening.

The uni has some clubs, but the ones I’m interested in ‘just-so-happen’ to hold activities at the same time on the same day all too often. I’m too busy for the computing club this year (not sure whether the IT people actually allow non-faculty members to join, hmm.) but since you mentioned it… the anime club meets today and I guess I’ll just have to tear myself away from my beloved Writers Association long enough to go to it for once.

*blinks* does Singapore really have so many nerds/geeks though? Comparatively, I mean. The Melaka born-and-breds from Malaysia might have a substantial amount of these guys too…?

  • Not sure about Monash, but I do have quite a few nerd friends studying in Australia in the Melbourne area.

This is odd, since most of the times the nerds are the desperate ones and will settle for anything female. But I got one surewin method. Wait for the 3rd release of my tshirts. One of them is a social networking tool which you can use to good effect.

  • @ tj_han:

XD… taking the opportunity to do some advertising now, huh? But I thought that the 2nd-generation RIUVA T-shirts came out of the design churner just not too long ago?

Considering the shipping costs to Melbourne, though, I can only hope that the shirts will come out before July–then I can get you to send them to my home base, and I’ll pick them up at a lower cost *^-^*

Back to the topic… umm yeah, still HUNTing around for nerds. So far I’ve succeeded in meeting a few guys from Engineering, Medical, a BIS (IT) dude, and heaps of Commerce students. Alas, none of them still fit the bill…. Would you recommend Architects?

  • D: I want a nerd boyfriend now! Ugh. Too bad nerds are in short supply in my town. I’m fourteen, so I can’t just go out of town looking. ‘T is ABOMINATION! D:

  • LastlyButNotLeastly

That’s interesting… I didn’t know nerd or geeks or dorkos or whatever HAD girl/boyfriends.

  • hey… great text. I want a nerd! xD xD

  • Mostly true, though there are scary cases too.

Met someone who’s quite a geek. Wanted me to join gaming some MUD games. I’m not much of a fan of MUD games, but it’s fine by me. But to make a near full time commitment at MUDing whenever i’m free… Urgh.

Even chocolate lovers can’t stand gulping down an entire bottle of thick chocolate for every meals.

All in moderations. But overall, geeks are great. You dun have to be too skilled at conversations or worrying abt impressing him/her. They usually tend to be more easy-going. Personally, i dun like flashy people either. My impression of them is usually that they’re hypocrites or people who need to hide their low self-esteem. I dun have a high self-esteem myself, or perhaps i juz can’t be bothered anyway. Lol!

  • I’ve gotta start by saying this article and your comments just convinced me of two things:

1- that I need to go read a lot more on this website because you sound hilarious and intelligent at the same time

2- that I need to get myself a nerd boyfriend (well, it helped me to become firmer in my already present resolve)

Plus I’d just like to say that I’m a girl with many nerdy interests (can’t say I know as much about computers etc. as you seem to), but I tend to go after the ‘Flashy’ boys anyway.. a very bad habit. What I’ve learned is that most of them know nothing about girls and I can’t really talk to any of them. Whereas with all of my male friends, most of them nerds, I feel completely comfortable discussing day-to-day things or hanging out in comfy clothes and no makeup.

It’s a refreshing change every time they open their mouth. Even at my age, if they aren’t yet highly educated most of the nerds I hang out with/have met/flirt with are driven and open up to conversation fairly quickly.

Also I’m not very experienced yet, and my friend (another girl) and I find the prospect of starting a relationship with someone else who doesn’t expect the world from you an extremely calming notion. Makes the whole pre-relationship process a lot less stressful. Not to mention the appreciation I get from the whole room every time I go to play halo or magic with a room of guys is great for my self-esteem. So if any other lady out there reads this I just want to say that I wholeheartedly agree!

  • lol this is hilarious lol…..its kind of true i feel more comfortable speaking to the geeky types rather than the flashy dumb guys……flashy guys tedn to only speak about stupid stuff that are common but with the geeky type theres a bit more interesting things to talk about…..i have a habit of falling for the good looking type……..i never see the geeky or nerdy type as a boyfriend type for some reason i dont really know why…..the ideal man would be one whos atleast fairly good looking…has a great sense of humour…can socialise….. some one whos really intelligent…and has a sense of hygiene……lol….or in other words good looking and clever….

  • I got myself a really sweetheart and he’s almost as geeky as they come. I love him to death and really truly loves me back. He’s kind sweet and caring and he’s not just looking for a peace of ass. ^^ okay, I’m a bit of a nerd myself so i understand when he gets excited about the new issue of “White Dwarf” but still…

  • you’re SOOO DAMN right…
    you got my salute here…hahaha…

  • *^___^*

I’ve met the nice-ish geek and the stuck up nerd, I can be both at times 0__o”
but can someone fix this equation?
    nerd girl nerd boy…

how can it be if they’re both shy and anti-social and never get up enough courage talk to anyone let alone each other in the first place?
Being pretty nerdy and very shy indeed, I think that this article is really awesome but it seems that its relying heavily on the non/semi nerd to approach the nerd.
All this article has done is make the nerds feel better about them selves-ish but not enough to convince them(correction: replace “them” with the word me) that it’s ok to go out and talk to people, because… not everyone in the world has read this article, and not everyone is as accepting as the people who’ve commented and rated this thing 5 stars, nerds will still be nerds, and generally rejected.

Sorry to destroy the illusion but, It’s just a little reality check. yea…

    .::smile has faded::.

  • i’m gay should i get a nerdy bf lolx… the above do not apply for gay nerds who naturally have a sense of fashon.. heheh

  • thecenteroftheuniverse

Do guys like that really exist? I have never known any nerds/geeks but I would love to! I am also socially inept, spend every spare minute on the pc, love video games and never go clubbing/get drunk etc as I find it sooooooo boring! I would much rather stay in and play games lol : )

  • I haven’t had an official girlfriend yet (surprise, surprise! Haha), but I feel that I need to work on myself before I get involved with someone.

By work on myself, I mean I want to have at least a decent apartment, a comfortable style of living (not piss-ass poor, but not necessarily rich either), and be completely comfortable in my own skin (I’m close, but I’m not 100% yet).

    Great post by the way!

  • Someone who dates a nerd

I date one of those things up there!

To be honest, its great! and true :p

  • These are all the things I look for in a guy. :)

    Well, almost. Mostly, rather.

But I do think that while some guys can be extremely attractive, that’s about all there is after that. And going out with guys like that would be awkward, since I can’t really imagine doing something….like, normal? for a date, for some reason; every date scenario I can imagine that I’ve read about and all just doesn’t seem like it’d be very fun.

Staying at home, however, and playing some video games wouldn’t bother me at all. That would make a very good date, in fact.

I will be bookmarking this page and quoting it occasionally because of its truth. Thanks for the great article/commentary. ^^

  • as a geeky girl, this article, and the replies, makes me bawww…

Seriously, I NEED a nerdy boyfriend. I’m a complete geek myself, and probably couldn’t keep a normal boyfriend… I mean, I don’t leave the house for days at a time. I find it hard to talk to people (although I’ve ort of gotten over it…) and I hate crowds. Basically, I’d rather be at home.

Stuff like this reminds me why I love geeky guys. And it also reminds me of how they never even notice. I mean, I need a boyfriend who’ll understand why I’m so obsessed with zombies, why it is perfectly logical to not sleep, play games instead. Why I love the internet so much, to discuss quantum physics with me… but when I’m right in front of them, I get nowhere, ‘cos they’re too busy looking at the hottest girl in the building over the other side of the room.
And they would sooner obsess over and masturbate alone to her, than even look near me. I’m not even ugly or anything… I’m just average.

So how the hell does one grab a nerd’s attention, short of telling him how much you want him.

  • Accidentally stumbled upon here, great articles :)

  • It’s so true my bf now is a major nerd, and HE IS PERFECT! I’ve dated all sorts of guys, and nerds are by far the best!! Great article!

  • This entire article is truth, we have low expectations. I have yet to meet a geek out there that doesn’t love his girlfriend to death. We also are trust worthy, unless you touch the computer, then like yea…careful. >_> And I’ve got to admit he’s right, a girl that can code would be amazing. (I can dream can’t I? Dx) Also I mean, come on, half the time if you put some anime on and we’ll be quiet, if you need us, press pause and we are at the girl’s command. Unless it’s a new episode, then they may have to wait a few minutes, then we’ll be at a 110% at the girls command!

  • I’ve always been attracted to nerds. I was going through a bad boy stage when I was younger, but I found that relationships with the bad boys never lasted long and always ended badly. Usually with the bad boys or jocks, you couldn’t really sit around a have an intimate conversation. You couldn’t really discuss things outside the box. Nerds like to explore their minds, bodies and the world. I think once nerds become peaceful with their own existence and accept themselves, they truly can become fun, entertaining and loveable characters. There’s rarely a dull moment with a nerd, because they have knowledge, skills and hobbies.

I think one of the first crushes I ever had was with my best friend, who was a total nerdlinger, like myself. He liked me too, but we were both way too shy to ever do anything about it, and I have regretted it ever since. We were both socially awkward.

Now I’m with a great guy who is an IT and arts nerd. Apparently he’s liked me for ages, but was too shy and awkward to do anything about it. He likes to sit at home and do programming, which I find hilarious. He says it’s relaxing. He loves his music, and I enjoy the same kind of music that he does. He’s trying to start up a band, which I am helping him with, being experienced in the music scene myself: only by giving him advice and confidence. I don’t want to piss on his parade. I’m a little more outgoing than he is, which creates the ying and yang, which is what is needed in partnership.

Chicks need security if they are going to settle down, basically. As stated in this article, nerds make good marriage material. This is usually because they are quiet, peaceful and settled already. They can be trusted. Most nerds I’ve met are hilariously entertaining and make great conversation. They can explore ideas and areas that some people may not want to, because it is labelled as “boring” or “uncool” or just plain weird. Often with a little bit of confidence from someone else, the nerd will open up a world of amazement for anyone who is willing to give them a chance and open their mind to new knowledge and experience.

Forget those cliches of nerds in the media. They are hurtful and don’t reflect what nerds really are. Nerds love knowledge, so they may be seen spending a lot of time by themselves, and therefore may be socially awkward. When they do have time to spend with people, they make the most of it. With all of this knowledge going around in their heads at any one time, it may make them cranky and seem a little bit strange, but underneath all of this is a heart of gold.

  • Ahah. Ahah. I’m reading this and going, “whoa. Deja vu,” ’cause I just edited a similar article on Ocha! a few days ago, but written from the point-of-view of the nerd’s girlfriend.

You can go here (shameless plug COMMENCE!):

  • well, a girl typing from Brazil must say: i loved it

it’s been a while since i laughed this much

well, i just got a geek boyfriend, and it’s being marvelous

  • lol i am on the prowl for a nerd now

  • Opa! Eu li Brasil?!! Mulher?!

Escolhe EU!!!! EU!! OLHA EU AQUI!!!

  • omg i luv this article! told all my friends about it!! i’ve always preferred nerds, and now i have proof! YESSSS!! plus i find nerds more attractive anyway…haha

  • I am realistically not as well familiar with this matter but I do wish to take a look at blogs for layout strategies and intriguing subjects. You honestly described a subject that I mostly don’t care very much about and designed it especially fascinating. That is a wonderful blog that I will pay attention to. I previously bookmarked it for long term reference. Thank you

  • Dude that’s sooo awesome! After reading this, I think I’m gonna give that nerd who likes me a chance. The other guy never noticed me and the nerd is really sweet!

  • I spotted a website yesteday which appeared much similar to this, are anyone certain somebody is not replicating this site?

  • this is a grat article, but not entirely true. i have a nerd bf rite now, he’s cheated on me two times, almost got a girl pregnant last year , i usually dnt get wat his words mean in sms language and he notices almost every new damn thing that’s new on me. he just don’t talk bout it…
And he’s got a thing for boobs while im just 34C and doesn’t masturbate…(i think…)

  • So my boyfriend is a nerd and is very proud of it.

but he his second girlfriend is his xbox..
when we talk or skype he is reading manga (secretly) b/c he knows i get mad.

if your boyfriend is a nerd and your not, be prepared to listen to him talk and talk about things you have never heard of.
but the good side of that is your learn lots of cool things like cosplay, thats something fun you can do together.

If you really love him, you’ll have fun learning about all his nerdy interest.

My boyfriend is a nerd but he is the most loving guy. Hes good with his word and says romatic things he rind out his manga or comics.
